Just outside town from Nueces River RV Resort, you will find the Devil’s Sinkhole, an attraction you won’t want to miss. Nestled just 30 minutes north of the campsite is Rocksprings, TX. This historic town is situated on Edwards Plateau and got its name from the natural springs found nearby.
The sinkhole, a recognized National Natural Landmark since 1985, is the third-deepest cavern in the state. Specifically, it’s a vertical cavern cutting into Edwards Limestone and is situated at the headwaters of Hackberry Creek. It has an opening around 40 x 60 feet and a vertical drop to the cavern of about 140 feet. The sinkhole first formed when an underground system collapsed, exposing the caves to the sky above.
Make sure to see the bats! One to four million Mexican Free-Tailed Bats spend their summers at the sinkhole. From Wednesday through Saturday, anyone can enjoy evening guided trips to the caverns to see the millions of bats fly into the air in search of food for the night. Visitors may start seeing a few bats emerge from the sinkhole around dusk, so make sure you hang around to see!
Before You Go!
Reservations are necessary, and only guided excursions are permitted at Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area. All tours begin at the Visitors Center, at the intersection of US Highway 377 and State Highway 55.
